Gamelan Intensive: Music, theater, education, and composition, and their application to teaching and performing

Register for MU 095 – CRN# 60408

Class Meets:
Friday, June 20 – Thursday, June 26
9:00am – 6:00pm

Continuing participants in the weekday workshops will go more deeply into music, culture, theater and composition. There will be intensive workshops on ensemble aspects of the gamelan as well as technique and improvisation in sessions on individual instruments. Theater will be explored through demonstrations and instruction in shadow-puppet theater, including the epics most often used as well as coordination between music and puppets. Techniques for group process in creative music making will be demonstrated and structured for classroom teachers, along with cultural information that can be presented with these processes even in the absence of a gamelan ensemble per se. For musicians and composers, these same processes — along with ideas about time, ensemble, and interaction — will provide new inspiration for playing not only gamelan, but any instrument.
