University of Vermont College of Medicine

Founded in 1822, the University of Vermont's College of Medicine is nationally recognized for its innovative Vermont Integrated Curriculum, which emphasizes the interrelated nature of basic and clinical sciences, in addition to its research in areas including cardiovascular, cancer, neuroscience, and lung biology. Each year, the medical school graduates nearly 100 physicians and 20 biomedical Ph.D.s.

The medical school draws more than $82 million in funding annually - a 300 percent increase in the past decade.

Its close affiliation and proximity to Fletcher Allen Health Care, the state's sole teaching hospital and a Level 1 Trauma Center, makes the College of Medicine an ideal place to attend medical school. Vermont is one of only 20 states with both a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a General Clinical Research Center funded by the National Institutes of Health.

The UVM College of Medicine continuously ranks in the top 15 percent for primary care among the nation's 126 medical schools, including fifth place most recently, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2009.
