In this course, students will travel to the great spas of Central Europe’s Slovakia and Czech Republic, with their well-established medical treatment programs, to learn the tradition of medical spa care and its role in modern public health promotion, disease prevention and patient rehabilitation. Over the course of 2 weeks, students will visit seven spa resorts, each with its own unique geographic location and quality of mineral-rich spring water. Students will spend time experiencing the hot springs firsthand, learning about spa operations, clinical practices and local health care. In collaboration with local experts, students will visit the clinic and spa treatment units and learn about the skills and techniques used to eliminate pain and/or restore deteriorated function. Students will observe patient admissions, physician-patient consultations, physical examinations, development of personalized treatment plans, final medical examinations, patient release and patient follow ups. The course organization is intended to provide students an opportunity to experience traditional spa culture as it has historically been practiced as well how it operates in a more modern/contemporary setting to promote healing, wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
