Choosing a Program

Several factors are important to consider when choosing between an internship or a service-learning program.  Beyond deciding whether an internship or service-learning placement is a better fit for you, here are some other things to think about:

Area of Focus

For some students, the primary goal for participating in an internship or service-learning program is to develop skills in a field they hope to work in after graduation. If this sounds like you, then begin your search by narrowing down the areas of focus that will help you meet that goal. Focus areas are numerous and include Marketing and Finance, Education and Public Policy, and Environmental Sustainability and Public Health, to name just a few.

Location

For some students, the location of their internship or service-learning program is the most important factor to consider. Is there a country you’ve always wanted to visit? Perhaps there is somewhere you’ve been that you would love to spend more time in. Is there a language you want to improve your proficiency in? Or perhaps you want to make sure you can communicate comfortably in your day-to-day life, which means it’s important to be somewhere where you can speak the language. If the location of your placement is the biggest factor in your decision, you may want to begin your search by finding out where each of our partner organizations offers programs. From Australia to England, China to Chile, India to Peru, there are many locations available.

Length of Time

Another factor to consider is the length of time you want to spend in the internship or service-learning program. While summer is a busy time for many students, and some of our partner organizations offer four-week programs, we encourage you to choose a placement that’s at least six weeks long. This can help you get as much out of your experience as possible.
