Healthcare Management Certificate Program Overview
OVERVIEW
As a practitioner in healthcare, you already have expertise in caring for the health of others. The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management is designed to complement your healthcare experience and improve your leadership and management skills within the healthcare environment.
Advanced level courses are interdisciplinary to meet the needs of a diverse healthcare industry, while focusing on core competencies. Curriculum includes courses from the University of Vermont School of Business Administration, School of Nursing and Health Science, and the graduate program in Public Administration.
- 18 graduate credits that combine core courses and approved electives.
- Several courses draw upon the expertise of practicing healthcare professionals.
- The certificate can be completed in 12 or 24-months on a part-time basis.

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management curriculum focuses on five (5) core content areas:
Healthcare Policy & Current Trends in Healthcare
- To understand the basic structure, driving forces of change, performance characteristics, and strengths and weaknesses of the US healthcare system.
- To improve critical thinking and communication skills in framing, analyzing, and interpreting the meaning and consequences of healthcare policy issues.
- To develop the ability to compare, contrast, and appreciate conflicting viewpoints, different disciplines, and diverse interpretations of US healthcare performance, structure and management.
- To recognize and analyze current and emerging trends in healthcare that directly impact management and healthcare delivery.
Management Issues
- To understand and address the major issues and challenges face by healthcare providers and managers.
- To employ appropriate problem assessment and resolution tools
Analysis and Decision-Making
- To understand the applications and limits of analysis and decision-making models.
- To develop the ability to structure decisions through decision trees, risk analysis and management, and conflict resolution within the broader context of the organizational culture.
Information Technology
- To understand complex systems and technological resources that impact healthcare management and policy development.
- To use technology to research and analyze critical information in a healthcare organization.
Ethics
- To heighten awareness of expanding complexities surrounding health-related issues, patients, and technological advances.
