We are The University of Possibilities at the University of Vermont, your doorway to academic excellence.
Each year, Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) helps thousands of non-traditional students continue their education at the University of Vermont. Through collaborations with the various colleges and schools, we offer courses and programs to help students explore their options, whether they are planning a career change, looking for personal enrichment or professional development, or preparing for an undergraduate or advanced degree.
Let Continuing and Distance Education help you access the University. Learn more about our programs and offerings, then call us to meet with an advisor to map an educational plan based on your background and goals, or access one of our many community events on campus and around the state.
CDE has a staff of personnel dedicated to helping people access the University of Vermont. Our role is to aid in the course selection process by understanding your experience and goals, guide you through registration and be a resource during your time at the University. Curious if your past college credits apply at UVM? Want to understand where a program will take you after completion? Looking for resources for financial aid, tutors or UVM policies? Contact CDE and talk to an advisor to learn more. You have the goal; let us help you achieve it at the University of Vermont.
Each semester, over a thousand non-degree students enroll in more than 400 courses offered at convenient times for working professionals and part-time students. Undergraduate and graduate-level courses are offered for individuals interested in personal enrichment as well as for professional and career advancement. Courses taken through Continuing and Distance Education can also prepare students to enter a UVM undergraduate or graduate degree program. There is no application process for taking an individual course, but we encourage students to always contact Continuing and Distance Education to aid in the course selection and registration process, especially for first-time students.
In collaboration with various UVM colleges, Continuing and Distance Education offers programs in health, business, education, college re-entry, engineering, accounting, and the environment. Well designed for working professionals, these programs are often shorter than a degree program and provide a body of knowledge applicable for career change and career advancement. Several programs have applications or special registration processes, so contact Continuing and Distance Education for more information.
CDE offers professional development opportunities for mid to high-level business owners and managers and national higher education administrative, student affairs and legal professionals. Arts and Cultural Events
Enhancing the vibrancy of the UVM community and the state of Vermont, the Aiken Lecture Series, Lane Series performing arts program and the state-wide Osher Life Long Learning Institute are fulfillment of CDE’s land-grant outreach mission.
From late May through August, almost 400 courses are offered through Summer University for UVM undergraduate and graduate students, non-degree students, visiting students from other institutions, and high school students. Innovative field study and travel study courses are offered, in addition to over 40 online courses.
During the winter break between fall and spring semesters, Winter Session is a short inter-session of mainly online and travel courses for UVM undergraduate and graduate students. These courses are a great way to get ahead a few credits for spring semester or fit in travel-abroad experience.
