Frequently Asked Questions

Who are GAP students?

A majority of GAP students have transferred to UVM from other college programs, although a small percentage come directly from high school. Almost 50 percent of the students are between the ages of 22–30, with 36 percent between the ages of 18–21 and 14 percent over 30 years old.

Am I considered a UVM student?

Yes. GAP students are enrolled as non–degree students in the University's Continuing Education office. These students have priority registration for classes offered by Continuing Education.

Am I eligible to enroll in day and evening classes?

GAP students take courses offered by Continuing Education. GAP students are also able to register for reserved seats in undergraduate classes, which may be offered at various times during the day.

Can I take courses at other colleges while enrolled in GAP?

Yes, but courses in the contract must be taken through the University of Vermont.

Can I take a course that is not part of my GAP contract?

Courses that are not listed on the GAP contract need to be approved by an advisor.

I enrolled in UVM courses several years ago. Can these credits be counted toward my GAP contract?

No. Students must inform their advisors of any coursework completed at UVM prior to establishing a GAP contract.

Must I select a major to enroll in GAP?

The GAP contract is established for a college. A majority of GAP students choose "undecided" major while doing GAP. Students cannot change their majors during the contract. However, upon admission to the university, students may elect to change majors.

Can I be admitted to UVM if I don't achieve a 3.0?

Possibly. Your application goes through the regular transfer admission review process and admission is not guaranteed.

If I do not meet the requirements of my contract, am I eligible to re–enroll in GAP?

No. Students are eligible for enrollment in the GAP only one time.

How often do I need to meet with my academic advisor?

Each semester, a student must meet with an academic advisor to determine the required courses for that semester and to monitor progress toward completion of admission requirements. All courses completed in the program must be approved by an academic advisor in Continuing Education prior to enrollment.

Is Financial Aid available to GAP students?

Financial aid is usually limited to Stafford loan money for those eligible on a need basis. Students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as a "non–degree student" and the Certificate of Eligibility or Intent to Enroll forms, available from an academic advisor. These forms must be submitted to the UVM Financial Aid Office. Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) grants may also be available for Vermont students.

Are campus resources made available to GAP students?

Students have access to the library, athletic facilities, and other campus resources when they show their CATcard (the University ID card). Students may obtain cards free of charge after registering for classes. The CATcard office is located on the bottom floor of the Davis Student Center. Additionally, students should purchase parking permits through Transportation and Parking Services, located on the Trinity Campus. A driver's license and car registration are required for a permit.

What academic support is available to GAP students?

GAP students can receive tutoring services in specific subject areas as needed, and can receive assistance from the Writing Center in the Learning Coop. In addition, they can qualify for supportive academic services through the ACCESS office.
