What are the University’s priorities for summer session?
As noted in the Provost’s letter to the campus community in the recent Faculty Advising Guide for Summer 2009, Summer University impacts retention, enrollment management, accessibility to University resources, environmental stewardship and increases diversity on campus.  Please feel free to review the advising guide for the full statement from Provost Hughes and to learn more about the reason students benefit from participating in Summer University.

What are the best practices for ensuring healthy summer enrollments?
Based on the experience of many faculty who have taught in summer session, we have compiled this list of suggestions to increase enrollments in your summer course:

  • Ensure students have access to all the important, decision-making information for reviewing your course: a thorough course description, a syllabi (tentative or sample syllabi can be as informative), typical assignments or recommended reading lists, and your curriculum vitae.  This information can be submitted to facultyguide@uvm.edu now and will be included in your course listing.
  • Open the weekly email from Summer University to check your current enrollments.
  • Make announcements in your spring courses regarding your upcoming summer offering.  Ask your colleagues to make similar announcements in their classes as well.
  • Ask your department’s student services staff to disseminate your course information to students in advising sessions or through email updates.  Focus on what requirements your course will fulfill to help students make progress in their degrees.
  • Email your advisees and students who have previously taken courses with you regarding your summer course.  Use the email template available.  Word of mouth is a highly successful route to increasing enrollments.
  • Download one of the Summer University poster templates included below.  Have a work-study student from your department poster areas of campus with your course information.
  • Direct students to use the Summer University website for course selection at uvm.edu/summer.  Due to our use of the “interest list” we are able to work with you to management enrollment limits and provide additional sections based on student need and demand.

What tools are available to me to assist in recruiting students for my course?
Summer University maintains a searchable database of courses on its website at uvm.edu/summer/courses.  As a course reaches its enrollment limit, an “interest” form is generated for students to complete to express their desire to take the course.  Working with faculty, our staff manages these students to increase capacity in the course, add sections or steer students to other courses that meet their needs.  Please encourage students to use this course list so we are collecting the interest information centrally and can work with you to recruit students to your course.

How can I stay up to date on my current enrollment status?

The staff of Continuing Education will be sending you a weekly email which will contain your current enrollment status.  If your course has reached its maximum enrollment capacity, a CE program planner will contact you about any interest list activity.  Contact a Continuing Education program planner at any time with questions or comments about the weekly enrollment email at facultyguide@uvm.edu or by calling (802) 656-2085.
