Required Courses

The required courses for the Sequence for School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Assistants are as follows:

  • CSD 020: Introduction to Disordered Communication
  • CSD 022: Introduction to Phonetics
  • CSD 94: Development of Spoken Language (Pre-requisite for M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders)
  • CSD 125: Clinical Experience/Becoming an SLPA
  • CSD 126: Clinical Experience/Supporting Children with Communication Disorders
  • CSD 164: Structure of the English Language

Elective Courses

Additionally, one of the following courses is required as an elective:

  • CSD 023: Beginning Linguistics or CSD 80: Introduction to Linguistics. (Both are Pre-requisites for M.S. in Communication Science and Disorders)
  • CSD 101: Speech & Hearing Science (Elective) (Pre-requisite for M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders)
  • CSD 271: Introduction to Audiology.
  • CSD 299: Autism Spectrum Disorders: Assessment and Intervention. Please note: this course is offered via video-stream on a designated day and time.

Course Descriptions

Courses are three credits unless otherwise noted.

CSD 020: Introduction to Disordered Communication
Survey of language, speech, and hearing disorders, emphasizing the importance of understanding such disorders as a part of the fuller understanding of human behavior.

CSD 022: Introduction to Phonetics
Linguistic, acoustic, and articulatory phonetics applied to the description of speech. Stresses use of the International Phonetic Alphabet with English, foreign languages, and disordered speech.

CSD 023: Beginning Linguistics (Elective)
The study of communication with language, our most human attribute. Designed for students pursuing a career in speech-language pathology.

CSD 080: Introduction to Linguistics (Elective)
Introduction to biological, cognitive, and cultural bases of human communication through language, and to modern linguistic theory. Assignments provide opportunities for critical thinking and writing.

CSD 094: Development of Spoken Language (Pre-requisite for M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders)
Speech and language acquisition interpreted in light of current learning and cognitive theory, linguistic theory, and methods of linguistic analysis.

CSD 101: Speech & Hearing Science (Elective) (Pre-requisite for M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders).
Please note: this elective is recommended only for those planning on going onto graduate school.
Structure and function of the respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, and hearing systems, coupled with models of speech and hearing as part of human communication. Credits: 4.

CSD 125: Clinical Experience/Becoming an SLPA
We will develop an understanding of roles and responsibilities of being an SLPA within a school or rehabilitation setting, focusing on working with birth to 22 year olds. An overview of relevant special education regulations, HIPAA standards, and health and safety issues is provided. Observation skills and data collection practice will be developed as well as learning how to work on a team, including working with a supervising SLP.

CDS 126: Clinical Experience/Supporting Children with Communication Disorders
In this follow-up course, we will learn relevant screening tactics, further developing observation skills. Intervention strategies including evidence-based practices and response to intervention strategies for articulation, language, fluency and voice will be developed. We will discuss working with diverse populations of students as well as working through difficult interactions. Further developing team collaboration skills and communicating with families will be studied.

CSD 164: Structure of English Language
Using descriptive linguistic theory, this course examines basics of English grammar with emphasis on hands-on examples. Also includes exploration of politicization of English grammar. Pre-requisites: 3 hours English or CMSI.

CSD 271: Introduction to Audiology (Elective)
Please note: this elective is recommended only for those planning on going onto graduate school.
Survey of hearing and the nature and causes of hearing impairment. Includes an orientation to assessment procedures and rationales, hearing screening and counseling considerations. Prerequisite: CSD101.

CSD 299: Autism Spectrum Disorders: Assessment & Intervention (Elective)
Assessment and intervention considerations in communication, social interaction and play, selection and use of evaluation tools, and implementation of intervention strategies for children with autism. Available as an evening course. Please note: this course is offered via video-webstream on a designated day & time.
