Project Overview

Providing the community with a unique opportunity to learn more about a pivotal literary figure, the project seeks to contextualize Duras’ work within a broad political and social landscape, and to provide an opportunity to experience her work viscerally in performance, the way it was intended.  As a woman on the vanguard in every sense, Duras is a crucial and underrepresented voice in theatre history.  The romance, the blues, and the heart-breaking intimacy of her account of the human toll of imperialism make India Song a classic.

The project creates a dynamic educational experience by providing myriad points of entry and connection with an art object as well as alternative versions of the art object over the course of the semester’s investigation.  Duras' artistic practice asks us to question what we mean by a “finished” artwork and what we understand as truth in fiction.
