Join us for a rare opportunity to see Duras’ 1975 film adaptation of India Song on 35 mm. This notorious cult-classic stars Delphine Seyrig and Michaël Lonsdale, with music by Carlos d’Alessio and cinematography by Bruno Nuytten. The film revolves around a passionate diplomat’s wife in Calcutta during the 1930s-- the last gasp of the Raj. Duras uses off-screen voices and a haunting score to tell the story of her tragic fate, while in the shadows of the French embassy’s gardens the Beggarwoman shrieks and sings. The screening will be preceded by a Burack President’s Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Jane Winston from Northwestern University at 4:30 pm at Billings North Lounge.
Special thanks to Brigitte Bouvier and Eric Jausseran; Marie Bonnel, Marie Losier, Marta Dansie; French Cultural Services and French Institute, Alliance Française in New York and Boston; and to Merrill’s Roxy Cinemas for making this special event possible.
