Duras' India Song ProjectA Celebration in 4 Parts:
Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the death of Marguerite Duras, legendary French novelist, playwright, filmmaker and theorist.
2006 marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Marguerite Duras (Gia-Dinh, Indochine, 1914- Paris, 1996) one of the most important figures in 20th Century French literature, whose multi-layered texts and films are haunted by the hangover of colonialism and fragmented by the failures of memory.
Although she is well known in this country as the author of The Lover and the screenplay Hiroshima Mon Amour, one of her most vivid writings for the stage, India Song (1973) lingers in obscurity, as it is rarely produced in English translation. Mounting a rare production of the play to commemorate Duras’ life and work provides an ideal opportunity for a semester long investigation of the drama’s unique aesthetics, Duras’ oeuvre and her significant contributions to a wide-range of genres.
The entire project consists of an academic course, production of the play, film screening, and a symposium with international experts on Duras.
