Winter Session Online Course; 12/26/13 - 1/10/14. Open to both CE and Degree students. This course may or may not fulfill degree requirements for UVM students. Please consult with your Dean's Office if you have any questions about applicability of winter session courses toward graduation requirements.
This course offers an overview of how students can apply their experiences, skills, and knowledge in the professional world of collegiate athletics. Students will learn about different careers in the field from marketing and promotions to event operations, fundraising/annual fund, facilities, communications, licensing/branding, business operations and athletic administration. Coaching and Athletic Medicine however, will not be covered in this one-credit course. Using undergraduate academic experiences, students will have an opportunity to learn through a variety of assignments. Students interested in this career path will have an opportunity to learn first hand what job opportunities are available in the field, regardless of your major/minor or courses taken. This is an opportunity to also learn about courses that would be relative to enroll in to gain more knowledge, generate ideas on internship experience, gain networking skills, and develop a resume that would stand out to someone in this profession.
Readings ? There is no text for this course however readings will be posted on Blackboard under ?Course Readings.? Coursework ? There will be two forms of work required: discussion postings and writing assignments as outlined below. ? Discussion postings: Throughout the course there will be questions posted on Blackboard. You will be required to post answers by 5pm on the same day each module begins. Commenting on classmates? posts will be a part of your participation. ? Writing assignments: There will be four short online exercises or self- evaluative activities posted on Blackboard. These assignments include a self-evaluation and research on a position with in the field. Further instruction will be given on these in the syllabus and should be posted on the Blog feature of Blackboard.
40%: Class Participation ? based on class attendance; logging on to the class everyday except weekends (the course is accessible on the weekends and you may post work then, but you are not required to log on or post during the weekends), class discussions, and responses to classmates? postings. 60%: Written Assignments ? There will be four assignments due during the course based on Modules 1-4. Each assignment will be clearly outlined with specific due dates. These are minimum 1-page, maximum 2-page assignments. There will be a 10-point deduction for each day the assignment is due. Your discussion and participation will be graded on a 1-10 scale for each module (4). Each writing assignment (4) will be graded on a 1-15 scale. You can find your current discussion and assignment grades by clicking on "My Grades" in the Course Menu at left. If you do not see the course menu, click on the small "arrow" symbol at the left edge of the page and the menu will appear.
