This course focuses on population health and community partnerships. Students will provide care to a defined community within their clinical groups and will work in collaboration with professionals in a variety of settings. Prerequisites: PRNU 132, 231, 234, 235; Corequisites: PRNU 240.

Section Description

This is travel-study course for senior nursing students at UVM. The focus is on population health and global health issues in the context of an immersion experience in rural Uganda. The course objectives are the same as those for PRNU 241 offered on campus but there will be comparison of U.S. and Ugandan health concerns and roles for public health nurses. 1. Examine historical, environmental, social, and political forces that impact the health of populations. 2. Describe the purposes of epidemiology and its importance in caring for populations. 3. Compare and contrast community and public health nursing models, theories, and standards of practice. 4. Employ the nursing process, incorporating research and theory, in health promotion, disease prevention, and protection strategies with populations. 5. Demonstrate integration of previous knowledge and experiences in caring for populations. 6. Apply the concepts of community partnerships to provide a holistic approach to enhance health and quality of life of the population. 7. Analyze the complexity of the roles of the nurse in community and public health through a variety of experiences in the community across the continuum of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. 8. Use ANA Standards of Nursing Practice and Code for Nurses to guide practice.

Section Expectation

This is an intensive course, with both didactic content and clinical experiences taught in Uganda. Readings are offered in pdf format. Students will carry readings using an e-reader of some sort to reduce the burden of paper and waste disposal in Uganda.

Evaluation

Evaluation will be done jointly in collaboration among student, faculty and teaching assistant and will involve work prior to, during and following the trip. The grading system is shown below: Readings and discussion on African/Ugandan and American health, nursing and public health. Every student is expected to lead discussion in some topics from readings.) 30% Reflective journals (30%) and post-travel reflective paper (see guidelines 20%) 50% Journals and paper due February 28, 2013 Presentation of Uganda experience to U.S. class and/or faculty/students of CNHS or other interested groups (e.g. STT or hospital groups) Spring semester 2013 20% Group project, see criteria, due as scheduled in March to early May 2013 Collaborative work with Ugandan community workers and NGO partners, nurses and other health professionals S/U
