Section Description

This course is about walking in the footsteps of a fisher and/or fox over the course of 4 days in UVM's Jericho Research Forest. Learning to find, age, and interpret tracks, gait patterns, and trails in snow will be demonstrated, discussed, and practiced, but are secondary to overall goal of experiencing the winter wilderness from the animal's perspective. Excursions outdoors will be mixed with classroom discussion and a trip to Jericho's Snowflake Bentley Museum to understand the dynamics of snowflakes and how to age tracks with precision in winter.

Section Expectation

There are no prerequisites for this course and it does not assume nor require that the student have any background, experience, or education in tracking. Students are simply asked to exhibit an open mind, positive attitude, thirst for knowledge, and respect for others Students must attend all 4 days and are responsible for their transportation to the Jericho Research Forest (address is 127 Tarbox Road, Jericho, VT 05465). Must dress for the weather and bring a lunch. Morning and afternoon hikes for 2-3 hours each day over varied terrain covering 1-2 miles. Students should also expect to spend approximately 1/2 hour daily outside of class for online homework.
