2 Credit Hours

This class will explore various styles and forms of jazz poems. In the first classes, we?ll examine some of the less sympathetic, and even racist, poetry of the 1920s, then quickly shift into more discerning writers like Langston Hughes. Then we?ll look at and listen to the responses of a few poets associated with the Beat movement (Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Kenneth Rexroth). The course will then delve into some of the more mature and considered work of contemporary writers such as Yusef Komunyakaa, Sascha Feinstein, William Matthews, and Lynda Hull.
