Section Description

This course focuses on population health and community partnerships. Students will provide care to a defined community within their clinical groups and will work in collaboration with professionals in a variety of settings. [All material will be adapted for use in Uganda.] COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Examine historical, environmental, social, and political forces that impact the health of populations. 2. Describe the purposes of epidemiology and its importance in caring for populations. 3. Compare and contrast community and public health nursing models, theories, and standards of practice. 4. Employ the nursing process, incorporating research and theory, in health promotion, disease prevention, and protection strategies with populations. 5. Demonstrate integration of previous knowledge and experiences in caring for populations. 6. Apply the concepts of community partnerships to provide a holistic approach to enhance health and quality of life of the population. 7. Analyze the complexity of the roles of the nurse in community and public health through a variety of experiences in the community across the continuum of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. 8. Use ANA Standards of Nursing Practice and Code for Nurses to guide practice.

Section Expectation

This travel-study course provides the same content as the on-campus course in public/community health nursing, however, the frame of reference will be broader, including both U.S. and Ugandan information. Students are expected to do the assigned readings and to attend class prior to and during the time in Uganda. Clinical days will consist of combinations of hospital, public health and community development work, in character with global health work. Students may expect to work some portion of most days, including weekends, while in Uganda. The trip also includes a weekend break midway through the course, and ends with a short safari. Reflective journals are required throughout the experience, and a final reflective/analytical paper will be due about a month following return. Students will also present their experience to the on-campus class in late April.

Evaluation

Readings and class participation 30%, reflective journals and post-travel paper 50%, presentation in PRNU 241 campus class 20%, collaborative work with Ugandan nurses, nursing students and community workers/NGO staff in Kamuli (clinical evaluation) P/F.
