Students learn to write standard messages and documents including e-mail, memos, letters to the editor, fundraising letters, news releases, brochures, and feature stories. Prerequisites: CDAE 024, ENGS 001, or ENGS 050; Public Communication majors/minors only.

This course introduces the essential skills needed to write strategically, concisely and vibrantly in any format, with a focus (summer only) on food writing. Students will learn how to identify and target messages and story ideas, plan and organize a story, conduct interviews, write feature stories and press releases, newsletters, emails and letters, blogs, brochures, and opinion pieces, along with honing skills in recipe writing and editing.
This course combines lecture and discussion formats, with occasional guest speakers from the food writing and communications field. Students should expect to spend 4-6 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for a semester-long project.
Grades will be based on attendance and participation, daily assignments, and a successful completion of a semester-long project.
