Spring 2010
Understanding the Ecology of Leadership and Advocacy in the Vermont State Legislature: A Field Based Experience - How can I influence what Vermont will look like in the future? Who are the key players? How did they become leaders? What are the knowledge, skills and values that guide their actions? Based at the Vermont State House, students will be immersed in the legislative arena. They will meet with legislative leaders including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Senator Pro Tem and House Speaker. Students will be matched with a House or Senate member based on their policy interest and shadow them, following the path of legislation being discussed. They will meet with advocates and lobbyists as well as members of the Executive Branch in order to understand their role. At the end of the course students will understand how decisions are made, how broader forces influence decision making; what rules or procedures are commonly used, who the key players are and what the mindsets of key officials are. By being exposed to the people, processes and current policy issues in the legislature, students will have the tools to move from the sidelines to center stage in building a more humane society.
