The course catalog says: "Foundational course for statistical methodologies. Exploratory data analysis, probability distributions, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing & regression." The main goal of this course is for you to be statistically literate. The goal is not to memorize a lot of formulas and procedures, but to understand the thinking that goes into using data to understand the world, so that you can use statistics successfully in your field of study and in your daily life. We will definitely do some computation, but will focus also on understanding the problem and making the proper interpretation. About 3 weeks into the semester, you'll be leading some informal introductions to JMP for the Stat141 students, so you'll need to know a bit of JMP. The easiest thing is to play around with it a bit. In case you don't know, it's available for free download for all UVM people. Go https://www.uvm.edu/software/ for information on downloading it. Class: We look forward to seeing each other in class every day. Those who do well and ultimately receive the highest grades in STAT 141, typically are absent from class NO MORE THAN one or two times. It's possible for some to get by with irregular class attendance, but real understanding and success is unlikely. It should also be noted that examination questions often address issues that have been introduced in class, and may not necessarily appear in your book or lab manual. Try to avoid arriving late to class or departing early. This can disrupt the quality of our academic venture. If you must leave before class is finished, please notify me ahead of time.
