Notes

Winter Session Online Course: 12/26/17 - 1/12/18; Open to both CDE and Degree students; This course may or may not fulfill degree requirements for UVM students. Please consult with your Dean's Office if you have any questions about applicability of winter session courses toward graduation requirements

Section Description

An examination of the use of superhero tropes and conventions in the more serious and weighty comics that we typically call "graphic novels." Although the course is conceived as a coda or supplement to ENGS 030, that course is not a prerequisite. We will read seminal work by Alan Moore and Frank Miller; we'll also read some critiques of the genre and the industry, including work by Mark Waid and Dylan Horrocks.

Section Expectation

You will prepare around two substantial books per week, plus a series of online lectures. You'll also participate in online discussion of the works.

Evaluation

Regular participation in online forums, plus a short final paper.
