Ever wonder where Tolkien came up with the word ‘hobbit’? Want to know the literary sources behind the names of the dwarves. Does Bilbo’s conversation with the dragon, Smaug, spark your imagination? Are you curious to know the degree to which The Hobbit is a literary and mythological masterpiece? Interested in plotting Bilbo Baggins’ growth as a hero? Want to know more about the Shire? In this two-week, two-credit online course, we will focus solely on Tolkien’s achievement in transforming a story written mostly for his children into a wonderfully crafted fairy-story that left its readers of 1937/38 begging for more hobbits.
Students will be expected to post almost daily responses on a discussion board and to complete assignments.
Students will be evaluated through their postings, two 3-page reviews, and two 8-page papers.
