About JAPN 096 WC1

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic components of contemporary Japanese culture through lectures, readings, discussions, and projects. Among the topics to be covered are Japanese pop-culture, traditions, business customs, and traveling in Japan. Students will also dine out together at a local Japanese restaurant and celebrate the New Year's, which is the biggest holiday of the year in Japan.

Winter Session On Campus Course; Dates: December 26, 2016-January 13, 2017; On campus face to face meetings from 12:00-2:30 pm Monday-Thursday (January 9-12); 12:00-5:00 pm Friday (January 13); Open to both CDE and Degree students; This course may or may not fulfill degree requirements for UVM students. Please consult with your Dean's Office if you have any questions about the applicability of winter session courses toward graduation requirements.

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the basic components of contemporary Japanese culture through lectures, readings, discussions, and projects. Among the topics to be covered are Japanese pop-culture, traditions, business customs, and traveling in Japan. Students will also participate in hands-on activities (calligraphy, origami, tradition tea/snacks, etc.) and dine out together at a local Japanese restaurant and celebrate the New Year's, which is the biggest holiday of the year in Japan. Components of the course will include: 1) lectures and films 2) reading assignments and discussions 3) blog assignments (post by 10am on the due date) 4) a project presentation and 1-2 page abstract 5) hands-on cultural activities 6) celebration of the New Year’s at a local Japanese restaurant 7) a project paper
