Section Description

Class dates are Dec. 28, 29, 30, 31 9:00am-5:00pm; Students provide own transportation to UVM Jericho Research Forest. This course is both unique and complimentary to the other tracking courses (WFB 013, 014, 015) in that it affords the student a rare opportunity to ‘walk with the animal’ (i.e. fisher and fox) over several consecutive days to enter its world, see through its eyes, experience a portion of its winter journey, and become skilled at identifying its tracks. These predators, and their prey, are studied in detail through their tracks and trails. Students work in tracking teams and share observations, learning about the animals and themselves in relation to the beauty and stillness of the winter landscape. Class alternates between outdoor tracking and classroom discussions around the wood stove.

Section Expectation

There are no prerequisites for this course and it does not assume nor require that the student have any background, experience, or education in tracking. Students are simply asked to exhibit an open mind, positive attitude, thirst for knowledge, and respect for others. Preparation and Participation – One to two hour excursions from the onsite heated classroom for examination of these trails will require hiking in the snowy hills of the research forest in seasonably cold winter weather. Students are expected to dress accordingly. Snowshoes are not needed. Transportation – Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Jericho Research Forest (127 Tarbox Road, Jericho, VT 05465) and often share rides.

Evaluation

Submission of pre- and post-course journal reflections based upon course content and experiences tracking in the forest.
