To be a compelling singer on Broadway, actors must not only be able to command a range of singing techniques, but also be able to "act the song." In these special courses, you'll learn both aspects from one of the leading vocal trainers in the field, Bill Reed, and transform your singing and performing abilities.

Musical Theater Audition Prep
Monday-Thursday, June 29-July 2, 2009, 9am-12:45pm
CRN# 60940

If you are preparing for a musical theater audition, you'll need to have 16 measures of a solid song, and a minute-long monologue that will knock the socks off the panel of reviewers. So you certainly don't want to use the same material that everyone else is using, or that doesn't suit your age, style, or abilities. And then there's your presentation and attitude to consider. Come to this 4-day course and work with Master Teacher Bill Reed to hone your audition material and be prepared for the audition season ahead.

Registration:

Registration opens February 17th. UVM students may register with the UVM Register. Non-UVM students may register here or call 802.656.2085 for more information or assistance.

This course is available for college credit only. Your tuition rate will depend on whether you are an in-state student ($391) or out-of-state ($987).

Vocal Technique and Performance
Monday-Thursday, July 6-30, 9-11:30am
CRN # 60941

Students will learn both singing technique and song interpretation, as well as the history and development of musical theater. Videos and recordings will accompany lectures and demonstrations, and there will be a heavy emphasis on individual and class participation.

    Students will learn:
  • The difference between a Broadway legit voice, belt voice and Broadway mixed voice
  • Anatomy of the vocal mechanism and techniques for developing an efficient vocal technique for each voice quality
  • Song interpretation that includes stylistic issues as appropriate voice qualities, key selection, phrasing, diction, and all aspects of acting a song will be covered

To get the most out of the class, students should plan to bring the sheet music of a memorized Broadway song to the first class. This class is recommended for those with a strong interest in musical theater, and basic vocal skills of matching pitch and carrying a tune. Experience in musical theater productions a plus.

The culminating cabaret performance will be open to friends and family, and will be a requirement for those students taking the course for credit.

Class capacity is limited to 14. If you try to register and the class is full, you can send an email here to be placed on a waiting list.
