Gerontology

Senior women working out on health equipment. Why it's hot: As the U.S. population grows older and lives longer, more and more professionals are needed to advise or care for seniors, especially in the areas of health, finances, recreation, travel, adult day care and real estate.

Careers: Social services case manager, retirement counselor, adult day-care care, pension advisor, marriage and family counselor, recreation director, home health aide, and more.

UVM's program: The gerontology certificate is geared toward students who already have careers in such diverse fields as counseling, medicine, education, accounting but who want to gear their work toward senior citizens. The certificate can give you added flexibility in reshaping your career to fit the country's changing demographics.
